Spousal Sponsorship

Spousal sponsorship is a process in which a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their spouse or common-law partner to come to Canada as a permanent resident.

To be eligible to sponsor a spouse or common-law partner, the sponsor must be 18 years of age or older and must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act. Depending upon the situation, the sponsor must also have sufficient income to support the sponsored person and any dependents, and must not have a criminal record or be in default of a sponsorship undertaking.

To be eligible for spousal sponsorship, the sponsored person must be the sponsor's spouse or common-law partner, meaning they must be married or have been in a conjugal relationship for at least one year. The sponsored person must also be at least 18 years of age, and must not have a criminal record or be a risk to the security of Canada.

The process of spousal sponsorship involves several steps, including submitting an application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), providing proof of the relationship between the sponsor and the sponsored person, and undergoing medical and security checks.
